Shawn Brown benefits from a generalist background and as such practices in all areas of Commercial and Civil litigation. Shawn undertakes Criminal Law matters in all jurisdictions and accepts briefs in Family Law disputes. Further, Shawn often appears on behalf of the Department of Human Services to prosecute Child Protection matters.
Since signing the Victorian Bar Roll in May 2009 Shawn has appeared in a wide range on jurisdictions, namely the Federal Magistrates Court, the Family Court of Australia, the Magistrates’, Children’s and County Court and the Court of Appeal. Additionally, he has conducted disputes in VCAT (administrative law and guardianship matters) together with representing parties in mediations for commercial and estate disputes.
Shawn graduated from the University of New South Wales in 2001 with a Bachelor of Jurisprudence and a Bachelor of Laws. After completing a Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice he was admitted to the NSW Supreme Court in May 2002.
After his admission, Shawn commenced practice as a solicitor with Bateman Battersby Lawyers in Penrith NSW. Areas of practice included criminal law, workers compensation, personal injury, third party, estate & probate disputes, civil claims, family law, building and construction disputes, insolvency and commercial litigation.
Shawn was admitted to the Supreme Court of Victoria after relocating to Melbourne in June 2004. He then commenced practice as a solicitor with Ligeti Partners. His practice was focused on third party motor vehicle and general insurance matters conducted in the Magistrates Court and VCAT’s Real Property List.
In January 2006 Shawn accepted a position with Australian Associated Motor Insurers (AAMI). Shawn was vested with the authority of the company’s CEO to make binding decisions on the company to resolve customer disputes. Shawn also participated in the review and rewriting of various insurance policies sold by AAMI and its subsidiaries.
Having entered private practice prior to coming to the Bar, Shawn understands the work it takes for a firm to foster and maintain its relationship with their client.
