Profile:
Nimal Wikramanayake took a second class honours in his law degree at Cambridge University and was then called to the English Bar by the Inner Temple. He practised as an advocate (barrister) for a short time in Ceylon (now known as Sri Lanka) and migrated to Australia. He was admitted to practice as a solicitor in 1971 and practised for a year before he signed the Bar Roll in 1972. He was appointed a Senior Counsel in 2002.
Today however due to legislative changes he is entitled to practice in all the States and Territories of Australia. He has a large practice in the commercial law area with a leaning towards the sale of land, the law of mortgages and the law of landlord and tenant. He does the occasional testamentary work as well. In addition he regularly delivers talks at seminars on land and commercial law.
He was the editor of Voumard’s The Sale of Land in Victoria from 1978 to 1996 and has been the author of Voumard’s The Sale of Land since 1986. Voumard is the benchmark textbook on land law in Australia and was recently accepted as one of the top 20 legal books written in Australia in a survey conducted by Justice Peter Young, then Chief Judge in Equity of the Supreme Court of New South Wales (now Justice Young of the Court of Appeal). He collaborated with Dan Fitzgerald for a short time when they wrote “The Conveyancing Law in Victoria” in the 1990’s. He is a recognised expert on land law in Australia.
From 01/07/2008, Liability limited by a scheme approved under Professional Standards Legislation.
