Briana practises predominantly in criminal and quasi-criminal matters, and related jurisdictions. Briana’s regular practice is appearance work in the County Court and Magistrates’ Court where she appears as junior counsel and without a leader.
Since coming to the Bar, Briana appears regularly in committals, plea hearings, bail applications, County Court appeals and trials. She also appears in Crimes (Mental Impairment) Act matters in the County and Supreme Courts.
Prior to coming to the Bar, Briana worked at the Office of Public Prosecutions where she initially gained experience within the General Prosecutions and Complex Crime (fraud) sections. From 2014 she worked in the Specialist Sex Offences Unit where she gained experience and expertise in sex offence committals, pleas and trials, particularly historical sex offences and matters involving child complainants, and in the procedural and evidentiary matters unique to sex-offence proceedings.
Briana also has experience in written advocacy. She has drafted notices and advices regarding the operation of provisions in the Evidence Act, Sentencing Act and Crimes (Mental Impairment and Unfitness to be Tried) Act and written advices for the Director of Public Prosecutions and Victoria Police regarding the sufficiency of evidence to prosecute. In addition to the provision of written advice Briana has provided training to Victoria Police on sexual offences and evidentiary matters unique to the investigation and prosecution of sexual offences.
Briana has completed Indigenous Cultural Awareness Training through the Koorie Heritage Trust. Since 2014 she has volunteered at the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre Human Rights Law Clinic. In this role she has been responsible for preparing cases before the Administrative Appeals Tribunal, Immigration Assessment Authority and Federal Court, including drafting legal submissions, applications and general case management.
Briana holds a Masters of International Law from Monash University and an Honours Degree in Arts (French) from Monash University and Université de Sorbonne-Nouvelle.
