Maryann first signed the Bar Roll in November 1995. She practised as a Barrister until October 2002. She then took the opportunity to practice as an in-house lawyer in various Commercial and Government roles. She re-signed the Bar Roll in May 2018.
She has extensive experience practising in-house in government and commercial roles, including public private projects, general commercial work, governance, intellectual property law, administrative law and legislative development and legal policy work. Her unique experience enables Maryann to provide advice and understand the issues which are relevant in advising and acting on behalf of government and corporate entities.
In Government, Maryann worked in Human Services, Housing, Consumer Affairs Victoria, VicRoads, National Transport Commission, Port of Melbourne Corporation, Nurses’ Board of Victoria and Agriculture Victoria Services P/L.
Her diverse experience in these Departments, Statutory Authorities, Corporations and the Board included advising on commercial law, construction matters and property law, governance, retirement villages legal issues, statutory interpretation and administrative law, governance, intellectual property law, freedom of information, privacy and equal opportunity and discrimination law.
She has also appeared in VCAT, attended mediations and conciliations. Maryann is also very experienced in all stages of legislative development, from policy development through to the draft Bill.
Prior to returning to the Bar, Maryann was the General Counsel at Agriculture Victoria Services, a company which commercialises Victorian Government Owned Intellectual Property in Agriculture. She has also worked as Legal Counsel at a publicly listed company, Praemium Pty Ltd.
During her time at the Bar, Maryann practised in commercial law, including construction law, planning law, intellectual property and general commercial law. She regularly appeared at VCAT in both its original and review jurisdictions. She appeared in hearings, mediations, compulsory conferences, applications and directions hearings. Maryann also ran a number of jurisdictional matters when the Domestic Building Tribunal was established and then when VCAT was created.
