Samantha practices in criminal law, with particular experience in corporations law. Prior to coming to the Bar, Samantha worked as a lawyer at the Commonwealth Director of Public Prosecutions for over 7 years between 2006-2013, in both Melbourne and Sydney. Her practice largely consisted of complex commercial frauds, being the case officer for the Opes Prime prosecution, and a member of the prosecution team in the first foreign bribery prosecution (The Queen v Note Printing Australia Limited and Securency Pty Ltd and Ors). In Sydney she was a member of the prosecution team for the FAI/HIH prosecutions. She has a significant background and understanding of the Corporations Act 2001 and the Criminal Code 1995. She also has extensive experience in all summary matters prosecuted by the Commonwealth Director, as well as indictable matters involving drug trafficking, child pornography, bankruptcy and social security and other frauds.
Samantha also worked as a lawyer at Victoria Legal Aid in the Civil Justice team in 2013. In this role she appeared in summary criminal pleas and in various tribunals, and as duty lawyer in the infringements list.
She has significant advocacy experience, having appeared in the following types of matters:
- Contest mentions and summary hearings
- Contested committals and committal mentions
- County Court and Magistrates’ Court pleas
- Bail applications, including for extradition matters
- Conviction and sentence appeals in the County Court
- Directions hearings in the Supreme Court
- SSAT, AAT and VCAT
As a solicitor, she has also drafted trial and appeal documents for the Supreme Court and the Court of Appeal.
Having practiced in both Victoria and New South Wales, Samantha has an extensive understanding of criminal procedure in both jurisdictions.
She has a Bachelor of Laws (First Class Honours) from the University of Western Sydney. Her mentor is Justin Hannebery and senior mentor is Dr Gregory Lyon QC.
