Abbie Roodenburg primarily appears as counsel in criminal and quasi-criminal matters, such as tribunal and other disciplinary proceedings and coronial inquests. She accepts both prosecution and defence briefs in criminal matters and is experienced in running proceedings under the occupational health and safety regime, Crimes (Mental Impairment and Unfitness to be Tried) Act and the Sex Offenders Registration Act.
Prior to coming to the Bar, Abbie worked as a solicitor at the Office of Public Prosecutions for 12 years. Abbie has experience across all areas of criminal law and was involved in prosecuting cases of the highest complexity. For over six years, Abbie was a Principal Solicitor (and at times the Acting Legal Prosecution Specialist) within the Specialist Sex Offences Unit. Abbie regularly appeared in the Magistrates’ Court and County Court as well as appearing in the Supreme Court and Court of Appeal in her role at the Office of Public Prosecutions.
From 2003 until 2005, Abbie worked at Sharrock Pitman Legal, a suburban law firm practicing in a wide variety of legal disciplines. Abbie appeared and instructed in family law disputes, criminal law cases, disciplinary proceedings, commercial litigation matters and domestic building disputes.
Abbie also has a Bachelor of Science (Honours) majoring in Environmental Science and worked in that area from 2000 until 2002. From 2004 until 2005 she was a volunteer Solicitor at the Environment Defender’s Office.
