James practises in employment and industrial law. He also accepts briefs in criminal and commercial law.
Prior to joining the Bar, James worked at A.J. Macken & Co., specialising in employment law. He was involved in litigating employment, industrial and commercial disputes in the Supreme Court, the Federal Court, the County Court and the Fair Work Commission. James provided advice to employees, employers and industrial organisations on unfair dismissal and general protections applications, construction of employment contracts and enterprise agreements, restraints of trade, confidential information disputes and workplace investigations.
Before that, James was Senior Associate to the Honourable Justice Redlich in the Court of Appeal, Victoria.
James also worked for Criminal Law Policy at the Department of Justice. He advised government departments on a range of matters, including statutory interpretation, sentencing policy and the implementation of criminal justice legislation. He has experience with coronial inquests and investigations, having served as Associate to the State Coroner of Victoria, Judge Coate.
Outside of the law, James has a Masters Degree in history and has published in leading journals in Australia and Europe.
