Since coming to the Bar, Kieren has developed a busy oral and written advocacy practice, primarily focusing on the following practice areas:
Criminal Law
Kieren regularly appears for both Defence and Prosecution in a broad range of uncontested and contested criminal matters. Kieren has previously worked as a defence solicitor-advocate and brings a high level of zeal and tenacity to all his matters.
Common Law
Kieren acts for both Plaintiffs and Defendants in a broad range of Common Law matters, including medical negligence, personal injury, and WorkCover matters. Kieren also regularly appears in motor vehicle proceedings, dealing with both quantum and liability claims.
Regulatory Law
Kieren has extensive experience in dealing with medical regulatory matters and has previously represented healthcare practitioners involved in a broad range of proceedings, including coronial inquests, professional misconduct cases, criminal matters, privacy investigations, and Commonwealth medical matters.
Coronial Law
Kieren maintains a particular interest in coronial proceedings and has provided advice on a range of coronial proceedings. Kieren has also presented Continuing Professional Development seminars focusing on coronial practice to a variety of audiences.
Before coming to the Bar, Kieren practised in a range of jurisdictions, including as a Coroner’s Solicitor at the Coroners Court of Victoria, a solicitor at Avant Law, and as an investigator at the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency.
Prior to his legal career, Kieren spent almost a decade working as an Emergency Paramedic with Ambulance Victoria. In this role, Kieren developed an extensive working knowledge regarding medical conditions, treatments and procedures, and community health systems in Victoria.
Kieren’s qualifications include a Juris Doctor from Latrobe University, a Bachelor of Emergency Health (Paramedic) from Monash University, and a Bachelor of Journalism from Latrobe University.
Kieren is a member of the Common Law Bar Association, the Criminal Bar Association, and the Asia-Pacific Coroners Society. Kieren has also taught in the Bachelor of Law degree at Monash University and is a current member of the Austin Health Human Rights Ethics Committee.
Kieren’s mentor was Bruce McKenzie, and his senior mentor was Professor Ian Freckleton AO KC.
