Justin Hannebery SC Barrister

Justin is a trial and appellate advocate practising in Criminal Law and OHS matters. He also appears regularly in inquests and professional disciplinary tribunals.

In Victoria he has appeared extensively in Supreme and County Court criminal trials and bail applications. He has also appeared in the Court of Appeal on numerous occasions.

Outside of Victoria, most recently he has appeared in the Supreme Court of Tasmania Court of Criminal Appeal in Standage v Tasmania [2017] TASCCA 23 (2 November 2017)

He has appeared in the High Court in Diehm v Director of Public Prosecutions (Nauru) [2013] HCA 42 (30 October 2013).

He is experienced in Confiscation Act matters both in the drafting of applications and in courtroom advocacy.

Justin has undertaken the Australian Advocacy Institute’s teacher training program, and regularly assists with the Bar Readers' course.

In November 2017 Justin was elected to Bar Council, his tenth term since 2003. He is the Victorian Bar's representative and a director of the Law Council of Australia. He has previously served on the Bar Council Executive. He has served multiple terms on the committee of the Criminal Bar Association and has edited the CBA newsletter. He served on the working group planning and implementing the Indictable Crime Certificate.

He has appeared as junior counsel to Dunn QC, Richter QC, Tovey QC, Priest QC, Neal SC, Lyon QC, Holdenson QC, Van de Wiel SC, Beale QC and Tehan QC. He also regularly appears as leading counsel with a junior.

Justin has been a leading counsel for Victoria Legal Aid's Trial Counsel Development Program since 2011. 

He has been a member of Crockett Chambers since 2005 (www.crockett.com.au). He has been mentor to nine readers, namely Kier Dernelly, Deanna Caruso, Kelly McKay, Adrian Bates, Angela Wong, Samantha Holmes, Brett O'Sullivan, David Carolan and Joanne Poole.
