Profile

Pat practices predominantly in criminal law, and appears in trials and appeals.


Pat has appeared in numerous cases in the Court of Appeal, for both the defence and the prosecution. He has also run a number of jury trials, with and without a leader.


Prior to signing the bar roll, Pat gained experience in the Court of Appeal as Associate to Redlich JA. Before that he was a commercial litigator with Minter Ellison. He still appears in civil cases, and has a particular interest in contractual disputes. He was admitted to practice in 2005.


In 2011, Pat was selected to be a participant in Victoria Legal Aid’s inaugural Talented Junior Counsel Program.


Pat is on the Victoria Legal Aid Preferred Trial Counsel List.

Selected Cases

Supreme Court

R v Thomas (with J Kennan SC - Supreme Court of Victoria - Curtain J - October 2008): the re-trial of Jack Thomas - at which he was acquitted of terrorism offences

R v Benbrika (No 20) (2008) 18 VR 410 (with J Kennan SC): a successful application to stay a major terrorism trial on the ground that the onerous custodial conditions of the accused meant that they could not get a fair trial

Supreme Court - Court of Appeal

R v CRR [2011] VSCA 142 and R v Mitic [2011] VSCA 373 where verdicts of acquittal were entered following successful appeals against conviction.

R v Morgan (2010) 24 VR 230: a successful appeal against sentence which concerned the principles applicable to sentencing in the Koori Court

High Court

R v Moti [2011] HCA 50 (with Ian Barker QC): the High Court reinstated a permanent stay of the appellant’s prosecution on the ground that it was an abuse of process
