Paul Smallwood is one of the pre-eminent junior criminal barristers in Australia according to Doyle’s Guide. He has on multiple occasions been named as one of the pre-eminent junior criminal barristers in Victoria (in 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023, 2024, 2025 and 2026) and Australia (in 2020, 2022, 2023 and 2024).
In Orman v R (2019) 59 VR 511, Paul was lead counsel for Faruk Orman in the first ‘Lawyer X’ conviction appeal. His client’s murder conviction was set aside.
In Roberts v R (2020) 60 VR 431 and [2020] VSCA 277, Paul was junior counsel for Jason Roberts in Victoria’s first ‘second or subsequent’ conviction appeal. His client’s two murder convictions were set aside.
From 2020 to 2023, Paul was the Secretary of the Criminal Bar Association Committee.
Since 2020, Paul has been an elected member of the Greens List Committee.
From 2022 to 2025, Paul was a Director of the Sentencing Advisory Council.
Paul holds a Master of Laws from the University of Melbourne.
