Benedict Coxon

Profile

Benedict practises in all areas of public and administrative law.

He has particular expertise in regulatory matters, appearing in courts and tribunals in merits review and judicial review in areas as diverse as fisheries, liquor licensing and combat sports. Benedict also acts and advises in migration matters, both for applicants and the relevant authorities.

He has acted as counsel assisting, including before the Victorian Liquor Commission.

Benedict previously taught constitutional and administrative law at The University of Oxford, where he was a Fellow of Hertford College. He also practised in commercial arbitration and litigation in London.

He graduated from The University of Adelaide with first class honours in Law, and from The University of Oxford with a doctorate in Law, where he studied as a Rhodes Scholar.

Before undertaking his postgraduate studies, Benedict was Associate to Justice Besanko of the Federal Court of Australia.

He is an Honorary Research Fellow at The University of Western Australia. His main research interest is statutory interpretation, with a focus on interpretive provisions in human rights legislation. His publications have appeared in a range of Australian and international academic journals, and he has made submissions to parliamentary and governmental inquiries into proposed legislation in Australia and the United Kingdom.
