Meredith is a public and administrative law barrister, with a strong focus on taxation.
Taxation:
Meredith has over 18 years’ experience acting in tax disputes covering a wide range of different tax, administrative and constitutional issues. She has appeared successfully as lead counsel in numerous appeals before the Federal Court (including the Full Court) and is expert at identifying legal grounds of appeal. Meredith has extensive experience in matters involving the regulation of superannuation trustees, has provided advice on the lawful exercise of statutory power including in relation to the Commissioner’s access powers, and has prosecuted applications for freezing orders. She has experience in serious tax matters involving concurrent criminal and proceeds of crime proceedings.
In addition to merits and appellate appearances, Meredith has conducted compulsory examinations for the Commissioner and has provided binding determinations on legal professional privilege.
She acts for both the Commissioner of Taxation and taxpayers and has been recognised in Doyles Guide to the Australian Legal Profession as a leading Victorian tax barrister.
Judicial review and health:
Meredith has an extensive practice in judicial review of medical panel opinions. She has appeared for plaintiffs in migration judicial review proceedings, including successfully before the High Court of Australia. She appears in regulatory proceedings involving decisions of the Medical Board and Health Complaints Commissioner and in coronial investigations.
Meredith is a past chair of the Victorian Bar Pro Bono Committee and has served as a member of the Bar’s Ethics Committee and Equality and Diversity Committee.
She graduated first in her class from the University of Melbourne with a Juris Doctor degree in law (first class honours) and holds a Master of Laws, specialising in administrative law.
