Event Summary

As we are all pleased to see, commercial arbitration is becoming ever more significant in Australia, domestically and internationally, as a broadly accepted dispute resolution option. The courts, aided now by modern commercial arbitration legislation, are thoroughly supportive of commercial arbitration.

The Victorian County Court has now also developed modern arbitration rules and a practice note, reflecting the developments in the Supreme Court. Additionally, the County Court is actively supporting referencing of litigation proceedings to commercial arbitration under a range of institutional rules.

In light of these developments the Monash Law Commercial Disputes Group is hosting a seminar on the work of the Victorian courts in supporting and facilitating commercial arbitration. We have a panel of the judges directly involved in these courts who will address these current and likely further developments, all of which will be of great interest and valuable professionally for arbitrators, practitioners and others.

Dr Drossos Stamboulakis and Professor Clyde Croft are co-hosting the seminar, with a distinguished panel of Justice Delany, Acting Principal Judge of the Commercial Court, Justice Kevin Lyons, Judge in Charge of the Supreme Court Arbitration List, Judge Elizabeth Brimer, Judge in Charge of the County Court Arbitration List, and Judge Sharon Burchell. We will also celebrate the publication of Croft, Stamboulakis and Warren, International and Australian Commercial Arbitration (LexisNexis, 2021).

The seminar topic and discussion will also be of broad national interest and is, accordingly, available in person or by zoom. The seminar will be held on Monday 17 October 2022 from 5pm to 7pm at the Monash University Law Chambers, 555 Lonsdale Street, Melbourne. Light refreshments will be served. Please RSVP here.
