Revised residential noise regulations

The Environment Protection (Residential Noise) Regulations 2018 came into force on 13 October 2018 and replace the previous regulations made in 2008.

The Regulations set out prohibited times for using prescribed items which cause noise, such as lawn mowers, power tools etc. The revised regulations change the prohibited hours for using air conditioners, evaporative coolers and split systems used for cooling. The new hours of prohibition are Monday to Friday before 7am and after 11pm, weekends and public holidays before 9am and after 11pm.

A new exemption has been created to provide for the use of air conditioning and other cooling equipment during prohibited hours when a “heat health alert” has been issued by the Department of Health. These alerts are issued during periods of exterme heat or heatwaves. More information on the heat health alert system is available here.
